Introspection and the other blah-blah’s that follow

Thousands and thousands of books written every year, tonnes and tonnes of paper wasted to print the obvious on them, and then there’s you, who doesn’t give a damn about global warming after so much is being done. I’ll tell you how this becomes relevant eventually.

It was exactly quarter to twelve one day, four years ago, when my stomach was raging with hunger and I was hardly paying attention in my communications class, when my teacher uttered the word : Introspection. It was one word that still rings within me, like the lunch bell at noon. It’s been four years and I still couldn’t get over that one moment because it has changed me ever since. I was not the same person who had walked into the classroom that day, when I came out of it.

I am not an avid reader of self-help books, but i do like to read things, when I’m awfully quiet and have nothing to do but gain knowledge about the world around me and inside of me. Sometimes, I like to substitute that with listening to people who know a lot, about a lot. Kind of expands your horizon doesn’t it, when people talk about things you didn’t know, and in the process you know more? Similar things happen when you introspect. When you listen to yourself, talking to you.

It’s like taking a chair and sitting aside, watching yourself do things — studying, talking, playing, cooking, singing, dancing, and even love-making and analyzing if things are right or wrong with you. It’s like knowing if you would be happier in the longer run, if you took a decision today, and taking the decision based on the analysis you do, observing yourself. The decisions can vary from taking career choices to realizing the fact that you love someone, or maybe discovering your interests — be it painting, cooking, gardening or dancing, or maybe your presence is impacting others around you in some way.

It is important to give yourself priority and know yourself completely before others know you. Be aware of your shortcomings and learn to laugh it off, because you are your own best critic!

What is introspection?

Well. The dictionary says, “the examination or observation of one’s own mental and emotional processes”.

There are 1,005,366 words currently in the English Dictionary, and this word could just stir you up a little more than usual, if you think. Delving into yourself, and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Also, a useful self-help tip, which you normally read in the books which talk about the body, mind and soul. But do you really do that?

A simple exercise of taking some time off, everyday, just to think about what you did the whole day, and what you could have done, and how you can make tomorrow a better day, might help you. Introspection is more like a fruit bowl to your everyday diet. You know you should eat it, but at the same time, you can choose what you want on that bowl, the “sweet” and the “sour”.

Let’s delve deep into ourselves, soon. Shall we? Let’s just not keep buying self-help books in an effort of trying to motivate ourselves. Let’s try implementing them in real life.
